I'm a product of the state university system myself. Yet I was in there like a fish swimming around with no direction. The idea never really occurred to me that I should be thinking long-term about what I wanted to do with my life. I just wanted to be done with school and start making some money. Now I believe that experience prepared me beautifully for what I am now doing, yet if I had to do it over, I would definitely make different choices. I agree, though, that our emphasis here is skewed. Kids often lean toward a get-rich-quick plan in which, it is thought, that college is a waste of time.
